Digital Reproduction

There are three ways that we can create a digital file of your original artwork to be used for printing and reproducing.  We can photograph the original, scan it from a transparency or a print, or you can supply us with a high-quality digital file. We offer large-format scanning for any artwork size.

SCANNING TRANSPARENCIES

We understand that providing us with the original is not always easy, so we also accept transparencies or high-quality photographic prints. When working with slides, we prefer an 8x10 but can also work with a 4x5.  Our Scitex Eversmart Flatbed Scanner produces results equivalent to drum scans.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Digitally capturing the original artwork in our state-of-the-art copy studio: This is the preferred method if you can either bring or ship the original to our Rhode Island studios. Shipping insured art is not as expensive as one might think. We can certainly help you with acquiring cost-effective shipping if you need it. The benefits of having the original are numerous. First and foremost, in the printmaking process, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” If we have the original here while we proof, it expedites the process and helps us to be more exact in matching an original work.

If we do not feel the initial capture is of the quality, we will reshoot it at no cost to you until we are satisfied with it. It also gives us the ability to use special techniques, such as multiple exposures for highlights and shadows, that only a printmaker would fully appreciate. We fully have a digital scan-back on a 4x5 studio camera, a unique digital flat-field lens, and specialized lighting for copy work.  A standard capture takes 15 to 20 minutes to expose, yielding a 2GB Raw file.

DIGITAL IMAGE

You can also send us a digital file you may already have. If you send us a file, it is best to send us a "target" (a physical, hard copy print you have approved the colors on) for comparison. This can be the original or any hardcopy output you have made of it. If we do not get a target to match, we will send out an initial proof with minimal correction for you to comment on and work off of.

Please call us before sending us the file and let us know the size and format. If you can, it is advisable to do this before getting the work photographed. It is typical for many professional photographers to shoot too small files, which would be suitable for the web or advertising purposes, but lack the resolution to do high-end, large-scale reproductions. Ideally, we need a file at 300DPI at the final output size. We can interface with your photographer to ensure you get a usable file if you contact us.

BENEFITS

  • ~ 2GB Raw File

  • Flexibility to perform special lighting techniques to capture & enhance the texture of the painting. Providing more Three Dimensionality to the finished reproduction.

  • Capture original artwork up to 10x10 feet.

Notice

Many professional photographers lack the necessary equipment to produce this type of file in the field; although they may be outstanding photographers, this is a specialty, so we advise that you try and work with someone who specializes in fine art copy photography.
