Tom White
About
Tom White is a contemporary new media artist whose work lives in the opportune space between discovery and invention. His hybrid process involves the disciplines of painting, sculpting, photography, digital imaging, design, science, and technology - using both analog and digital media.
“I have embraced all of the contemporary tools of art making even before they were widely accepted in the art world. As an artist, it is important to challenge the viewer’s perceptions of traditional and new media and change preconceived notions of each. This allows the viewer to focus on images and question how they see them, adding dynamic new layers to the stories they create.”
Along with his wife Lois, Tom is an artist in residence and founder/director of WHITEPOINT Contemporary Gallery and Fine Art Services in Asbury Park, NJ. His 35+ year journey in the arts began with physics studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, then receiving his BFA from Syracuse University in which he studied printmaking, photography, and design.
Prior to founding WHITEPOINT, Tom was a sought-after award-winning art director and illustrator who worked 24/7 with clients in every major industry and media worldwide, including the 2002 Winter Olympics, The Grammy Awards, Hasbro, McDonalds, and The Golf Channel.
When the industry crashed in 2008, seeing the future, he pivoted his focus and moved his practice to the finer arts in 2010, eventually opening WHITEPOINT in 2013.
Two more recent successful solo exhibitions of note include “Seaside Dreaming: Grandeur” - a benefit exhibition for the Rema Hort Mann Foundation founded by art collectors Michael and Susan Hort, and “FLOW” - the WHITEPOINT 10th anniversary celebratory exhibition at which Busted and Crumple Canvases were introduced along with full-scale installations of Two Sides To Every Story.
Other highlights include a solo exhibit at Scope NY, a multi-location exhibition with the Ad Art Show in The Oculus at the World Trade Center, a twelve-floor permanent installation in a luxury residence in Washington DC, a seven-mural permanent installation at Cerner (now Oracle), and a permanent video installation for AEW Global Real Estate for all of their headquarter locations.
“I wholeheartedly reject artificial intelligence (AI) or any auto-generated imagery. All work is created by me. I think the most important thing about artists is their vision and ability to create their own work.”
Exhibition • Seaside dreaming
At the heart of my Seaside Dreaming work are the ideas of reminiscence, romance, timelessness, and serenity. What better subject than a seascape vista - constantly and dramatically changing while never changing?
Through my process, I distill moments of grandeur, time, light, and color into a single panoramic view - inspired by the same motivation that would make us stop to take in a grand view that captures our attention and tune out the world around us.
Employing a contemporary mix of multiple photographic exposures, digital imaging, and print methods, I produce the images in a way that references classical paintings that evoke the qualities I am looking for. The resulting images are heat and pressure fused to a satin aluminum surface with a luster that adds a sensuous depth and dimensionality. The surfaces react interactively with ambient light - like the changing light of day.
