Perception Abstraction

Beacon Gallery

We are delighted to have worked with Steve Edson for his newest project for his upcoming show “Perception Abstraction.” Steve’s work starts with the an ordinary line of paint, a beach scene, and the luscious hand-polished finish of a classic car from the 1930’s. Quite soon, though, they begin to dissolve into a study about our solitary existence. Each of us feels even amidst community and connection with others. Not just an observe, Edson is present with us, describing but also raising questions about what we think we see. His images reveal over and over the metaphorical fog that shrouds our experience, as well as the endless, sometimes overwhelming possibilities. He captures a moment of doubt on an exhilarating carnival ride, an obscure everyday moment in a department store when dissociation overtakes the route to the makeup counter. He pinpoints the moment when a profusion of packed color overrides cognition and becomes graphic abstraction. Some images are captured on the fly, some highly processed to drive home an emotion or atmosphere. He brings the broadness and keen editing skills of many years of commercial photography to his personal work.

Edson’s prints were produced on our Dye Sublimated Aluminum ranging from 18x26 to 27x40”. Each print in mounted in our Black Metal Float Frames.

“Perception Abstraction” is a two-artist show featuring works by Boston-based photographers Steven Edson and Fern L. Nesson. This photography exhibition seeks to explore these two artists’ diverse methods of looking through the viewfinder and electing what to capture on film, and how both create abstract artwork from the real-world viewfinder. From the mundane to the sublime, Edson and Nesson train their lenses on subjects familiar to all yet capture them in a way that allows for a new perspective and appreciation; revealing the artistry and beauty that surrounds us every day.
