Douglas Breault
Solo Exhibition at BabsonArts
Breault displays photographs that enlist objects and images from physical and digital worlds, creating compositions through layers of reflections in mirrors, glass, and printed pictures and matching the light to illuminate a fragmented scene. The work derives from observations of the precarious nature of materiality and grappling with matters of temporality and perception. The imagery of clouds, candles, and plants is distorted through the long exposure of the image to connect illusions to heaven and the distortion involved in hopeful recollection.
Breault freely misapplies traditional artistic photography, painting, and sculpture methods by purposely misaligning materials and connecting collected fragments. Materiality is essential to develop his ideas, subordinating form to process. The ongoing series of images presented in A Shot in the Dark is printed directly onto aluminum, using the dye sublimation process to reflect the light, similar to the fragmented mirrors and glass in the images.
Breault enlists obliterated images downloaded and printed from the internet and incorporates banal objects to build connections between narrative and memory. The process entangles a digital excavation combined with the sculptural element of altered objects and images. These accumulations coalesce objects, photos, and narratives into physical space using mimicry and abstraction to question truth and transformation.
